You wear a bra every day, but how much do you really know about the one piece of clothing designed to support you the most? At Lace Silhouettes Lingerie, we have spent decades helping women find bras that truly fit and feel amazing. Along the way, we have learned that many women are surprised by how much there is to know about proper bra fit and construction. Here are seven surprising bra facts every woman should know that, according to bra fit experts, might just change the way you shop for & wear your bras!
1. Most Women Wear the Wrong Size
Studies show that around 80% of women wear the wrong bra size. The most common mistake we see is choosing a band that’s too loose and cups that are too small. A professional bra fitting can make all the difference in finding a bra size that properly supports and flatters your shape.

2. You Might Be Wearing the Wrong Bra for Your Breast Shape
Not all bras are designed the same, and not all breast shapes fit the same styles! Fuller busts often benefit from balconette styles, shallow breasts tend to fit better in demi cups, and wide-set breasts may need bras with side support panels to help center and lift the bust.
Finding the right bra is about more than size. It's about matching the right style to your natural shape.
3. The Band Does Most of the Work
Many people think bra straps provide the majority of support, but in reality, the band provides 80% of the support. The straps are there mainly for shaping and stability whereas your band's primary responsibility is carrying the weight of your breasts. If your straps are digging into your shoulders, it's often a sign that your band is too loose and not doing its job.

4. The Gore Should Lay Flat
The center part of the bra, which is called the gore, should lie flat against your chest. If it lifts away from your body, it may mean the cups are too small or the band too loose. A bra that fits properly will rest comfortably against your sternum.
5. Sister Sizing Exists
If your usual bra size isn’t available, you can try your sister size to find a similar fit. This means going up a band size and down a cup size (or vice versa), while maintaining roughly the same cup volume. For example, a 34D and 36C are considered sister sizes.
At Lace Silhouettes, our experienced bra fitters can help guide you through sister sizing to find the best fit possible.
6. Your Bra Has a Lifespan
Unfortunately, even the best bras don't last forever. With regular wear, most bras last 6 to 9 months before the elastic begins to lose its support. Rotating between multiple bras and hand-washing them with a gentle cleanser like Soak can help extend their lifespan and keep them fitting beautifully. Soak soap is always available in our store!

7. Your Bra Size Isn’t Fixed
Your body changes over time, and so can your bra size. Weight fluctuations, hormonal changes, pregnancy and aging can all affect how your bra fits. That's why we recommend getting professionally fitted at least once a year to ensure you're still wearing the best bra size for your body.
